Manchester United Pursuing Top Goalkeeper Prospects: Who Will Be Onana’s Deputy?

Manchester United

Manchester United are in search of a reliable backup goalkeeper. While the Red Devils have secured the services of Andre Onana as their new No. 1 goalkeeper, they are actively exploring options for a capable deputy to support him throughout the season. The departure of David de Gea and the likely exit of Dean Henderson to Nottingham Forest have left the club in search of a suitable reserve shot-stopper.

Zion Suzuki Turns Down United’s Offer

Japanese youth prospect Zion Suzuki, hailed as “one of the most exciting goalkeeping prospects coming out of Japan,” recently rejected an offer from Manchester United. The 20-year-old is fully focused on representing Japan at the 2024 Olympics. Consequently, preferring regular football at his current club, Urawa Red Diamonds. Despite Suzuki’s talent, United respects his decision, acknowledging the need to explore other options for the deputy goalkeeper role.

Altay Bayindir Emerges as a Strong Contender

A name gaining traction in the rumor mill is Altay Bayindir, the Fenerbahce shot-stopper. With Henderson’s likely departure and Luton Town offering Heaton regular playtime, United is seriously considering the 25-year-old Turkish international. Bayindir’s experience, with 141 first-team appearances for Fenerbahce, including 11 in the Europa League, makes him a viable choice to back up Onana when needed.

Justin Bijlow: A Persistent Target for United

Manchester United have also shown interest in Justin Bijlow, with the club closely monitoring his situation at Feyenoord. The 25-year-old Dutch international has been impressive, keeping 15 clean sheets in 34 games last season. While United didn’t proceed with a concrete offer earlier, Bijlow remains on their scouting list. Feyenoord, however, is eager to retain him and has offered a contract extension. The situation remains fluid, and a renewed offer from United could make him the preferred reserve option.

Manchester United’s Goalkeeper Search Continues

While securing a new No. 2 goalkeeper is crucial, Manchester United has other transfer priorities too. Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta is their prime target as a No. 9, and the potential addition of Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina is also being considered. However, the need for a capable backup goalkeeper is undeniable, and the club aims to ensure high standards by adding a third goalkeeper to the squad, either a veteran or a promising young player.
