Mark Schwarzer says Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has made a huge error with his choice of goalkeeper. Arteta benched his goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale and started with David Raya against Newcastle United. Speaking to Optus Sport, Schwarzer reflects on Gunners’ shocking 1-0 defeat against Newcastle at the Emirates on Sunday. Moreover, many have raised questions on Arteta’s decision of dropping Ramsdale over the past few weeks. The Spanish goalkeeper has made some horrific blunders costing Arsenal in recent times. His positioning for Anthony Gordon’s goal was worth raising questions. Indeed, Jamie Carragher criticised Raya for his awareness after Willock’s cross went over his head.

The former Fulham goalkeeper mark Schwarzer was speaking on a podcast after the game on Sunday. He said,

“It’s one of those things, isn’t it? The manager, players, everyone makes mistakes and they’re making mistakes every single week. Unfortunately for a lot of managers, they won’t admit it, right?

Mikel Arteta is a great example of that. Let’s not go there with the goalkeeping position because he’s made a massive mistake there.

But yeah, I think it [post-match press conference] was bizarre.”

The Englishman was a first-choice during the previous campaign for Arsenal. However, it is looking obvious that Raya is now the primary choice for the manager. It might be due to the fact that Raya is better with the ball on his feet. However, Mark made a great point by saying Arteta has made some unnecessary problems by signing Raya. Though, he is still on a season-long loan, there are talks suggesting that Arteta wants to secure a permanent transfer.
