Mourinho wants to sign Spurs defender who he once publicly apologised

AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho wants to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier who he publicly apologised for subbing off.

The 29-year-old has fallen out of favour with current manager Ange Postecoglou. However, Spurs are in outstanding form as they’re currently unbeaten in Premier League this season.

Dier has not played a single minute under his new boss this season. Hence all signs point towards his exit in January.

The Three Lions international played under every manager at Spurs until Postecoglou arrived this summer. He was at his very best under Mourinho as he played 57 times under The Special One and was rarely substituted off.

However, during match against Olympiacos in the Champions League back in 2019, Mourinho subbed Dier off. This incident made him very angry as it was just after 29 minutes of the game.

Speaking after the game, Mourinho claimed that it really hurt him to Dier off in the first half. He then publicly apologised to the defender and said :-

“The most difficult moment of the game for me was when I made the change in the first half. It hurt the player but hurt myself. It’s not easy for the player, but also not easy for myself.

“It’s important that the player understands, and I was lucky that my choice was with a very intelligent boy and a boy that has very good understanding of what a team is, because I did it for the team. I needed at that time a second creative player. I had to do it for the team.”

“I apologise for Eric. He knows I did it for the team and not with an intention to hurt him.”
