Pundit criticised Van Dijk for being sluggish on the pitch

Pundit Damien Delaney criticised Dutch centre-back Virgil van Dijk for being sluggish on the pitch as he needs to charge up for the current campaign.

Every player differs in their style of play in today’s footballing world. However sometimes players get criticised for being too lazy on the football pitch.

French International Paul Pogba has always been criticised for not covering ground but that’s does mean he is a bad player. Lionel Messi also spends most of the time of the pitch standing still.

This laidback approach can work wonders for some players, but it also leaves players to open criticism. Pundits and Journalists often questions there work-rate and effort level.

Virgil van Dijk is now under such criticism. Pundit Damien Delaney questions his casual style which leads to error.

Speaking on Virgin Media Sports, Delaney questioned Van Dijk’s style of play. He said :-

“They’re in a period of change, the manager is there looking to implement certain ideas, when implementing change and playing the likes of France, Croatia and Italy you will get caught out badly. They got a good win against Gibraltar, they need to win tonight and go on a run to finish strongly.

“I agree that there is a casualness and a lackadaisical feel.

Absolutely, he is one (Van Dijk), the captain sets the tone and takes the lead. Other players will pick up on his energy and sometimes he is very casual and other players it rubs off on them, and the casualness seeps into the team.

He needs to set the tone and the tempo, playing quick, strong, defending correctly and engaging players to stop shots getting in on goal.
