Romelu Lukaku verdict on Serie A award and message to the Inter fans

In a recent interview, Chelsea record signing Romelu Lukaku revealed his happiness to be included in the Serie A top XI for the last term. He also thanked the Inter Milan fans for their support and faith.

Romelu Lukaku helped Inter Milan lift the Serie A title last term. The striker formed a formidable partnership in attack alongside Lautaro Martínez. Lukaku recorded an impressive 64 goals and 16 assists in 95 appearances for the Italian outfit. (stats via Transfermarkt) He undoubtedly established himself as one of the fan’s favorite.

But when his former side Chelsea came calling in the summer. It was too much for Romelu Lukaku to turn down that opportunity as he had some unfinished business with the European champions. The Belgium star initially joined Chelsea back in the summer of 2011. But he could not breakthrough at the club. The striker joined West Brom on loan and later joined fellow Premier League side, Everton, on a permanent transfer in 2014.

The Chelsea faithful were quite optimistic that the striker could help the club reach the next level. While both the sides were coming off quite successful campaigns. Chelsea lifted the Champions League trophy and Lukaku lifted the Serie A title. But things have not gone quite to plan. The striker has not really been firing on all cylinders and has lost his place in the starting lineup to Kai Havertz. Romelu Lukaku has recorded just 12 goals and two assists in 34 appearances for the blues this term. (stats via Transfermakrt)

What Romelu Lukaku say about his inclusion in the Serie A top XI

Speaking to Italian outlet AIC after his inclusion in the Serie A top XI, Romelu Lukaku said:

“The club [Inter] always backed us and so did the fans who I want to thank,” 

“Being ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo is something that doesn’t happen every day. To me, he is one of the best three players in football history. He also brought me to a different level because he does great things.

“I am really happy to be included in the Serie A top XI for last season. I want to thank all those who voted for me and the team that helped me a lot, the coach and his staff. It was the team’s achievement and it’s an honour to be in the top XI. “It was my dream as a kid to play in Serie A and I did all I could to achieve it. I am satisfied to have done it.
