Barcelona yesterday confirmed that their La Masia prodigy Sergi Roberto has signed a new one-year contract extension at Camp Nou. Roberto’s contract was set to expire at the end of this month. Moreover, there were speculations about his stay at Camp Nou after a disastrous season at the Catalan club this year. However, Xavi seems to have put his faith in the versatile player to continue playing for Barca.

His absence at the right-back position has been ably filled by youngster Sergino Dest. Moreover, with the coming of Dani Alves, Barca have now got a choice for that position. Alves, in this age, has the occasional spark left in him that he has shown in the matches in which he has featured.

However, now, Roberto has signed a contract that runs up to 2023. Moreover, the contract has also a release clause of €400million added to his contract. Roberto has been with Barca since the age of 14 and spent his whole time at the club.

However, this season was marred with injuries that forced him out of the game for long periods. That is why he was able to make only 12 appearances for Barca this season across all competitions. The Spanish midfielder made his senior debut at the Camp Nou back in 2010. Since then he has featured in 310 matches, scoring 12 goals and providing 37 assists.

What did Sergi Roberto say after his contract extension at Barca?

He said to the club’s official website:

I’m very happy to continue one more year here at the club of my life. I’ve been here since I was 14 years old. So, having this extra year is very important for me, especially after the last two years when I’ve had quite a lot of physical problems.”

I’ve not been 100% and I’ve not been able to play how I know and how I enjoy playing. This year is an extra opportunity for me to get back to enjoy playing, with the new coach and I’m sure it will work out really well.”

I think it will be a really good season. We need to be more united than ever, we know the situation the club is in, we need to keep pushing, keep working.”
