Van Dijk looked anxious last season — Peter Schmeichel

Virgil van Dijk

Former Manchester United Goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel claims that Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk looked anxious last season due to too many combinations in the back-line.

After Henderson’s departure for Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq, the Dutch International has now been handed the arm-band for the upcoming Premier League campaign. Van Dijk has been given the responsibility to guide back Liverpool to glory days.

However, Peter Schmeichel is not happy over what he is seeing from Liverpool’s new captain. The ManU legend questions Van Dijk’s decision making at the back-line.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live Sports, Schmeichel states that he monitored Van Dijk last term and in pre-season this summer. The 32-year-old centre-back looked puzzled due to many partners at the line of defence.

Schmeichel discussed his views regarding the issue :-

“Are you worried that you haven’t strengthen in that department?

“You have got Virgil van Dijk. He looks, again it’s pre-season games, but also based on some of his performances last season. He looks a little bit nervous and unsure about what he is suppose to do in these combinations that you could actually make in the centre of defence.”

Van Dijk needs a new centre-back partner at the back

With a complete new-looked Liverpool midfield this summer, Reds still haven’t addressed the defensive conundrum they’re currently facing.

Only Ibrahima Konate remains viable option , Liverpool needs a centre-back for the upcoming new campaign. Ever since the season-ending injury back in 2020, Van Dijk has lost something to his game.

However, the Dutch International will have some responsibility on his shoulders this season. Van will be the leading man of the dressing room.
