Alcaraz enters the top 5 in the WTA rankings

tennis player

Carlos Alcaraz entered the WTA Top 5 rankings despite losing to Lorenzo Musetti. He became the first teenager to do this after Rafael Nadal in 2005.

Alcaraz lost to the Italian Lorenzo Musetti by 6-4,6-7(6/8),6-4 in the Hamburg European Open final. Despite the loss, the rankings released on Sunday placed the Spaniard in the 5th spot. He could’ve gotten a rank advantage but the loss in the final restricted him from reaching his career-high 4th spot.

“It means a lot. The hard work that I put in every day for reaching my dreams, [No.] 1, and little by little I’m reaching my dream.” Alcaraz told ATP’s website. “Top five for me is pretty amazing and I will keep going to be No.1.”

Carlos Alcaraz is happy with the year he has had

The Spaniard is having a dream season in terms of titles, rankings, and special victories. Since the player started the year in the 32nd spot, he’s reached the top 5 within 7 months. Throughout this period he has clinched 4 titles including ATP 1000 (Miami and Madrid) and ATP 500 (Rio de Janeiro and Barcelona) this season.

There’s still an opportunity for Alcaraz to go for the Grand Slam title hunt in the US Open which will start from 29th August.

Meanwhile, the rankings released on Sunday revealed little or no change in the men’s singles rankings.

  1. Daniel Medvedev
  2. Alexander Zverev
  3. Rafael Nadal
  4. Stephanos Tsitsipas
  5. Carlos Alcaraz
