Arsenal are interested in signing Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz of Aston Villa. The Daily Mail’s Simon Jones has come up with the report. Moreover, Jones has claimed that the Midlands club rejected three offers from different clubs in January for Luiz. But the club is prepared to sell their 23-year-old midfielder in the upcoming summer window.
Furthermore, Football Insider has revealed that Arsenal were one of the bidders for Douglas Luiz in January. However, Aston Villa didn’t entertain Arsenal in the winter market for Luiz. But Arsenal looks determined to get their hands on the midfielder in the summer. Douglas Luiz has started almost every game for Villa this season but could find himself on the way out at the end of it.
Aston Villa signed Douglas Luiz in 2019 from Manchester City. The Villans paid £15 million for Luiz, who is almost on a salary of £40k-per-week. The Aston Villa midfielder has attracted interest from Arsenal as they look to resolve their midfield problems. Though Thomas Partey has finally found his feet, lack of depth in that position resulted in Arsenal’s defeat to Brighton. As a result, the Gunners now want to add Luiz to their team.
The latest development on Arsenal and their bid for the Aston Villa midfielder
Douglas Luiz has been a regular for Villa, playing 28 games this season in all competitions. Luiz has started 26 of them, scoring once and assisting thrice. He has put on decent stats as well, making 1.8 tackles and an interception per game. Moreover, his contribution to the attack is significant too, chipping in with 1.1 key passes and almost a dribble per game.
However, despite being a regular with Villa Douglas Luiz is shortlisted by manager Steven Gerrard for the players to be sold. Gerrard eyes an upgrade on Luiz, with Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips and Brighton’s Yves Bissouma on his mind. But buying any one of them would demand a high fee, and Gerrard wants to raise that cash from Luiz’s sale.
Arsenal have presented the opportunity for Aston Villa to facilitate the Brazilian’s sale. Luiz is 23 now and could be a long-term leader of Arsenal’s midfield. Moreover, with Granit Xhaka asking for an exit in the summer, Douglas Luiz would just fit into the Swiss midfielder’s role. The latest news coming from the Emirates is that Arsenal are actively pursuing the Aston Villa midfielder after their failed bid in the winter market.
Once the campaign ends, Arsenal could table a formal bid for Douglas Luiz. Mikel Arteta would then be able to reinforce his squad along with a new striker. Luiz has already earned appreciation for his performances in the premier league. Arsenal legend called the Aston Villa man ‘underrated’, further adding that Luiz is ‘ready to be one of the best midfielders in the Premier League’.
However, if Gerrard has made up his mind of selling Luiz, there is no going back. But Aston Villa would definitely demand a higher fee from Arsenal for acquiring their asset. Nonetheless, Luiz should be perfect for Arsenal, as he already has vast experience of playing the trade in the Premier League.
