According to Duncan Castles, Arsenal have reignited their interest in signing Tariq Lamptey. Moreover, Brighton is open to hearing offers from clubs like Arsenal. The Gunners have previously shown interest in the Brighton wingback. However, he later faced an injury and missed quite a few matches.
The England U-21 international has made 12 appearances this season for Graham Potter. Moreover, he has been impressive even after his hamstring injury. Brighton will not stand in the way of the transfer if a top club is interested in signing their player. Lamptey joined Brighton after leaving Chelsea in January 2020 and has been a great success yet.
They did the same with Ben White and can replicate similar negotiations with Tariq Lamptey. Brighton only have one condition and that is to offer the required fee for the player. They had a few offers before the final offer for Ben White but only agreed to the one where Arsenal met their pricetag.
Duncan Castles had this to say regarding Arsenal’s interest in Lamptey,
“What you have here is Arsenal, who had an interest in Lamptey when he burst onto the scene before that difficult injury that you referred to”
“They are looking again to sign him and exploring the parameters of the deal. I think Lamptey is an exceptionally attacking full-back. The limitation on him is his height and I think, therefore, he needs to play in a defence that either uses wing-backs or uses the full-backs progressively.”
What can Tariq Lamptey bring at Arsenal?
Tariq Lamptey has very similar characteristics to world-class fullbacks like Robertson and Trent. He provides width to his team’s attack and also helps in the defense. He can get past defenders using his pace and dribbling ability. The 21-year-old has quickly become a fan-favorite among Brighton fans.
His most effective strengths are his pace, dribbling, and defensive ability. He can help create spaces with his pace and dribbling and create more chances. Moreover, he is also very good at making interceptions, making a good amount of clearances, and is effective in blocking crosses.
However, there are a few weaknesses such as lack of physicality and short height. This can lead to him being dominated by very physical players. Nevertheless, he rarely lets that happen and covers his weaknesses well with his strengths. Arsenal can profit with Lamptey’s playing style which provides width and does not compromise the defense.
Arsenal have now found fine form and now must look to build on and secure a Champions League spot. Moreover, they will need depth in the squad to win trophies and this is where Lamptey can play a huge role. Tomiyasu has been brilliant for Arsenal but there are a few matches where Lamptey would have been a better option than Tomiyasu.
