According to Sport, Arsenal could sign the Real Madrid star Marco Asensio for just £50 million instead of a hefty release clause. The report further suggests that Asensio will not be accepting a contract unless he is offered more wages than what he earns currently. Moreover, the Spanish winger and attacking midfielder has a contract with Real Madrid expiring in 18 months.
Liverpool and Arsenal have already made offers for the Asensio as he nears an exit from Real Madrid through free transfer, as per Eduardo Inda. The 26-year-old Spanish international has a release clause of £587 million. No club can afford that kind of money, especially for a player who has achieved the heights of Marco Asensio.
Arsenal’s £50 million offer is what Real Madrid are asking. This has increased the chances of a deal taking place between the clubs. This has also made the Gunners’ favorites to land the player. However, it won’t be as easy since Liverpool might try again if they really want the player.
Hardly any player wants to leave a club like Real Madrid. Similarly, Asensio has never expressed about leaving Los Blancos but he must have realized what is the best move for him. He has to find his form again and get behind the ball more. The contract situation also seems uncertain as he only has 18 months left on it.
Why Arsenal should wait before signing Marco Asensio?
A £50 million price tag for a player whose contract is expiring in 18 months is bad business by Arsenal. After 10 more months, Marco Asensio will be free to discuss his future with other clubs. He can also agree to a pre-contract offer from other clubs. Arsenal in turn could use the £50 million for a different signing and get Asensio for a bargain.
If he had a few years left on his contract then the £50 million price tag was quite reasonable. However, that is not the case and Arsenal could get an even better price. Marco Asensio will certainly be a good player for Arsenal as he will elevate their attack massively. However, the Gunners could get another player plus Marco Asensio at that price.
Arsenal are already flooded with talented forwards but all of them are youngsters. Asensio has the experience of playing at the top level with top players. He has also enjoyed the privilege of scoring in a Champions League final. This experience will certainly be useful for players like Saka, Martinelli, and Smith-Rowe to get ready for the Champions League as the Gunners look closer to a UCL spot.
Marco Asensio could be scoring screamers at the Emirates Stadium next season if Arsenal moves carefully with their negotiations. Real Madrid can barely bargain for Asensio as they either have to sell him this summer or let him leave for free afterward. Both the situations are profitable for Arsenal as Real Madrid will either have to lower their price or have to be satisfied with a free transfer.
