Arsenal registered interest in Lisandro Martinez of Ajax Amsterdam and is now a priority for them in defense, according to The Athletic.

The Gunners are looking to sign at least two marquee signings this summer as they already secured the move for Porto midfielder Fabio Vieira in a jiffy and out of the blue. The club paid a transfer fee of €35m (£29.9m). Also, the 22-year-old player agreed to a 5-year deal at the Emirates Stadium outfit.

Other than that, the Gunners also identified Lisandro Martinez of Ajax Amsterdam as a possible incoming for them this summer. According to reports, the Emirates Stadium outfit management pinned down the Argentine as their prime defensive reinforcement ahead of their next season.

The Gunners are in for a busy summer this time. Edu and Arteta had a lot at their hands this time around. The club also missed out on a Top 4 spot in the recently-concluded campaign to their bitter rivals, Tottenham Hotspurs. As a result, they are back in Europe but not in the coveted Champions League.

Progress by Arsenal on this deal

According to The Athletic, Arsenal is now working on a deal for Martinez, with the capital outfit already having an offer rejected for the Argentina international. The report also claims that the 24-year-old’s ability to play as a left-back is what attracted the Gunner fraternity.  They had a €30m (£25.7m) bid turned down but are preparing to return with a fresh offer.

The South American enjoyed a decent last season for the Eredivisie outfit. In 37 apps in all competitions, he scored once and registered 4 assists. He was also a part of the Argentina squad which won Copa America last year.

Meanwhile reports also linked Barcelona and Manchester United to Martinez as well. A recent report claimed that Erik Ten Hag was keen to bring him to Old Trafford.
