The Sun have reported that Premier League side Aston Villa are monitoring Manchester United and French star Paul Pogba ahead of a possible free transfer next summer. Paul Pogba is out of contract in the summer and looks set to leave the red devils on a free transfer.

The French World Cup winner rejoined Manchester United back in the summer of 2016 for a record transfer fee of €105 million. Pogba initially left the Premier League outfit on a free transfer to join Italian giants Juventus. The French midfielder left Manchester due to a lack of game time under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. He made a name for himself in the Italian capital as a dynamic midfielder, making forward runs and skills on the ball.

Since his return to Manchester, Pogba has made a total of 222 appearances across all competitions. He has a decent goal involvement from midfield in this time. He has recorded 39 goals and 51 assists. (stats via Transfermarkt) The transfer was supposed to be the start of the re-emergence of the red devils. But things have not gone quite to plan.

Just like all the transfers involving bug transfer fees. The player is never quite able to live up to the price tag. While Paul Pogba can argue that the club has never quite built the team around him. The midfielder has now played under a variety of different managers as a Manchester United player. But the club are still yet to sign a perfect partner for the dynamic midfielder. He is often played out of position as a defensive midfielder. But the midfielder is always praised for his role in the French national team.

Paul Pogba unhappy with his role at Manchester United

Talking in a recent interview about the difference in his role with France and Manchester United, Paul Pogba said:

“It’s simple. With France, I play, and, in addition, in my position. I know my role, I feel the confidence of the coach and the players,”

“It’s normal to feel this difference with Manchester, because it’s hard to be consistent when you often change position, game system or partners.

“At Manchester United, do I really have a role? I ask the question and I don’t have the answer.”

Can Aston Villa compete with big European clubs for the signature of the French star?

Aston Villa looks like a very exciting football project in Europe at the moment with Steven Gerrard at the helm. But big European clubs including PSG, Juventus, and Real Madrid are all interested to sign the French World cup winner on a free transfer in the summer. Despite all things heading in the right direction for Steven Gerrard’s side. But signing a star with such a big name, expectations and wages seem lightyears ahead of the Premier League outfit at the moment.
