According to several reports, Atletico Madrid are keeping tabs on soon-to-be free-agent Alexandre Lacazette. Currently playing with Arsenal, the Frenchman’s contract is set to end next summer. And following Diego Simeone’s long admiration upon Lacazette, he wants to sign him for Atletico Madrid next summer.

Alexandre Lacazette started his career with Olympique Lyonnais in 2008 as he joined their youth setup. Following his development, he was promoted to first-team in 2009. And staying at Lyon until 2017, the Frenchman appeared 275 times, scoring 129 goals and 43 assists.

In 2017, Lacazette thought of taking up a new challenge as he joined the Premier League side Arsenal. The club paid 53 million for his services which was a club record at that time. However, his move to England has not been successful as he thought it to be.

To date, the Frenchman has appeared 173 times, scoring 67 goals and 29 assists in all competitions. While he has missed most of the time due to frequent injuries in his career. He was also unavailable at the start of the 2021/22 season as he was injured and returned back recently. However, his life at Arsenal seems to be near an end following his contract situation.

Lacazette’s current contract with the gunners is due to expire June 30, 2022, which means not even one year is left. And there have been no successful talks of signing a new contract. Following this situation, Atletico Madrid seems to sign Alexandre Lacazette for free next summer. Atletico has been an admirer of Lacazette as they approached to sign him earlier, but unfortunately, the deal fell off. However, this time they can get hold of their target if there are not too many complications.

Do Atletico Madrid need Alexandre Lacazette?

The current La Liga title holders have only one true number 9 in option which is Luis Suarez. While the team has depth in the second striker and both the wings. But with one center-forward option, it will be hard to carry on. While Suarez’s age being 34 it will be a worry to keep him playing all the matches.

Following this, Atletico Madrid needs a cheap addition at the upfront and seems to target Alexandre Lacazette for that. The Frenchman has lost his top form in the last couple of years, but Diego Simeone thinks he can help him get that back. Currently, it seems like a gamble to sign an out-of-form striker, but only the future can tell what will happen.
