According to several reports, Barcelona now have a tough competition in signing Edison Cavani as Real Madrid have also joined the race. The Catalans are keeping tabs on the Uruguayan since the summer transfer window after a failed deal for him. And with Cavani in Barcelona’s signing plans, the Catalans wanted him as a short-term solution from January 2022. But the road to get Cavani’s signature looks a bit tough as Real Madrid have also joined the race as potential buyers.

Edison Cavani joined Manchester United last season as he decided not to continue with Paris Saint-Germain. Joining the Red Devils for free, the Uruguayan has been a somewhat hit for United in the last season.

The forward playing 39 games for Manchester United in his first season, scored 17 goals and 6 assists in all competitions. Following his impressive performances, United extended his stay offering Cavani a one-year extension. Despite that, the Uruguayan was linked with a transfer away from the Premier League club this summer.

But with United manager assuring Cavani an important role made the forward stay this season. However, it has not been the same for the forward this season, as the Red Devils signed Cristiano Ronaldo this summer. The Portuguese is considered the first team starter ahead of Cavani which lead the Uruguayan to less game time.

Following this situation, Barcelona and Real Madrid want to capitalize on it considering him a short-term solution for the problems. According to reports, both the club will knock on United’s door in January for swooping the Uruguayan star.

Why do Barcelona and Real Madrid are considering signing Edison Cavani?

Barcelona invested in three forwards this season signing two free agents Memphis Depay, Sergio Aguero, and loaning Luuk de Jong. While the Catalans lost Antoine Griezmann and their main man Lionel Messi this summer.

Among the three new forward signings, only Depay has been able to show some good performances for Barcelona. Aguero is out suffering an injury for three months and is yet to make his debut. While de Jong has failed to grab Catalan playing style. Following this, Barcelona needs a short-term solution upfront and sees Cavani as the best option.

Real Madrid on the other hand are finding a short-term replacement for Karim Benzema who needs some rest from playing consecutive games. The Frenchman is in good form both for his club and country, but he is also a human who needs rest. And if not provided adequate resting time then it could lead to injuries. So, to less some workload from Benzema, Real Madrid are considering signing Edison Cavani.
