Sergio Gomez joined Borussia Dortmund in 2018. He was touted as a young playmaker with skills honed in the fiery Barcelona youth academy, looking to make a breakthrough in professional football.
However, he had a dismal start with Dortmund. Gomez had 3 games in his name in 18 months. Consequently, he was shipped on a loan to SD Huesca. Finally, was sold to RSC Anderlecht for a fee of €2.25 million. This move to Anderlecht turned out to be a steal for the club and a blessing for the player.
Sergio Gomez, the Barcelona youth academy graduate, has voiced his desire to return to Camp Nou.
Sergio played as an attacking midfielder for the majority of his career at Barcelona and also at Dortmund. However, Anderlecht quickly recognized his strength and started using him as a wing-back.
The 21-year-old was an instant success in the role. His creative prowess was on full display for the club in this position. His ability to create chances in the final third and creative passing ability makes him a lethal player. This ability added a new dimension to Anderlecht’s wide play. Gomez ended this beautiful spell with 22 goal involvements to his name.
This spectacular performance has attracted the attention of many clubs. Manchester United, Ajax, Southampton, Villareal, and Inter Milan are a few of the big clubs that have expressed their interest in the youngster.
Career revival of Sergio Gomez at Anderlecht
As per a report by Mundo Deportivo, there is a possibility that the youngster could return to his boyhood club. Barcelona is looking for a left-back option to bolster their squad.
However, currently, Barcelona are keen to sign the services of Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso. Reports have suggested that Alonso has verbally agreed to a deal with the club.
Moreover, many reports have also suggested that Barcelona scouts are keeping tabs on Gomez’s progress. There are also talks of making a move for him next summer as a replacement for Jordi Alba.
Gomez is also aware of this fact. He is also looking for an opportunity to return to his childhood club. Recently, in an interview for SER, Gomez voiced his desire to return to Barcelona. He also thanked the club for helping him hone his skill in his youth. Barcelona is currently in pursuit of Alonso for left-back. So, it looks unlikely that Gomez is heading back to his roots.
