Callum O’Dowda is nearing the end of his contract, and several Championship clubs are vying for his signature, Blues Focus understand. The 27-year-old has had an injury-riddled season, managing to score only a singular goal in the 21/22 campaign. His contract is up, and there is no extension on the table.
His experience will be a valuable asset to many clubs in the division. He joined Bristol City from Oxford in 2016, going on to score 10 goals and 16 assists for the southern club. Callum O’Dowda had his break out season in the 2018/19 season. There were rumours of interest from Premier League clubs like Fulham and Leeds. But unfortunately for O’Dowda, a move never materialized.
Birmingham City are one of the clubs interested in his services. However, they face competition from the Welsh team Cardiff City. A left-winger by trade, Callum O’Dowda is also capable of playing as an unorthodox wing-back as well. He is a neat dribbler with a burst of acceleration on him, which can be useful for breaking down defences and winning fouls. Whoscored highlights his tendency to help out the defence but also remarks that his weakness in holding up the ball may be a concern in a league where physicality is so important.
Bristol City have meanwhile announced his replacement: they announced the signing of fellow Irish midfielder Mark Sykes. The 24-year-old signed a 3-year contract after joining Oxford United.
A Good Buy For The Blues?
At 27, it is unlikely that O’Dowda will become much better than he already is. He isn’t a prolific scorer by any means. But he could surely be a solid, and reliable depth option, especially in an intense, 46 game season. For free, any club getting O’Dowda will be doing some shrewd, low-risk business.
