Champions League round of 16 draw: Everything you need to know

With the Champions League group stage coming to a conclusion, the Round of 16 draw is just around the corner.

Manchester City topped Group A with 12 points and PSG finished 2nd with 11 points. RB Leipzig drops down to the Europa League after finishing 3rd in the group. While in Group B, Liverpool finished the group stage with a perfect run winning all 6 of their games. Atletico Madrid secured qualification into the next round on the final match-day. AC Milan’s 2-1 loss to Liverpool meant that they finished 4th in the group and are out of Europe for the season.

In Group C, Ajax just like Liverpool won all 6 of their group stage games. Sporting and Dortmund both finished on 9 points. But Sporting qualified into the next round because of a better head to head record against Dortmund. Real Madrid topped Group D with 15 points, while Inter Milan secured 2nd place with 10 points.

Bayern Munich also won all 6 of their group stage games and finished in 1st position. Benfica finished 2nd in Group E with 8 points and Barcelona drops down to the Europa League after the 3-0 defeat to Bayern on the final match-day. Manchester United topped Group F with 11 points. Villareal finished 2nd in the group with 10 points.

In what turned out to be one of the most exciting groups of the group stage, Lille topped Group G. RB Salzburg finished in 2nd place. While Sevilla dropped down to the Europa League. In Group H firstly, Chelsea‘s 3-3 draw to Zenit on matchday 6 meant that Chelsea dropped down to 2nd in the group. Secondly, Juventus clinched top spot in Group H with a 1-0 win over Malmo.

Champions League round of 16 draw

The Champions League last 16 draw takes place on 13th December 2021. The draw will be held in the UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. As the name suggests, there will be 16 teams included in the draw. The 16 teams are made up of the eight group winners and the eight runners-up in the group.

Group winners

Manchester City, Liverpool, Ajax, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Juventus, Lille

Runners-up

Paris Saint-Germain, Atletico Madrid, Sporting, Inter Milan, Chelsea, Benfica, RB Salzburg, Villarreal

Rules for the round of 16 draw

  • The teams who won their group cannot face another team from their group.
  • Meaning that all group winners will be drawn against a team that finished in 2nd place in another group.
  • Teams from the same nation cannot be drawn against each other for the round of 16.

For example, Manchester United cannot be drawn against any other group winner. Nor can they be drawn up against any other English side like Chelsea or Liverpool, nor can they face Villareal who they faced in Group F.
