The initial draw for the Champions League round of 16 was held on Monday. But due to a mishap concerning the tie for Atletico Madrid, Liverpool, and Manchester United a re-draw was held. Following which UEFA declared the original round of 16 draw was null and void.
Initially, Manchester United were drawn up against Villarreal who they faced in the group stage and were ineligible to play, according to rules. Secondly, during Atletico Madrid’s draw, Manchester United were not included in the possible bowl of opponents. Atletico Madrid were drawn up against one of the favorites to win the competition Bayern Munich.
While Manchester United were drawn up against PSG. Atletico appealed against the draw straight away and United also joined in on the appeal. UEFA accepted their error and declared the draw null and void.

Champions League round of 16 re-draw
The re-draw took place just three hours after the original draw. Bayern Munich who were initially up against Atletico, will now face the Austrian champions RB Salzburg. Last year’s finalist Manchester City drew against Portuguese side Sporting CP.
Benfica are up against Ajax. The European Champions Chelsea drew last seasons League 1 champion, Lille in the initial draw and then again in the re-draw.
Manchester United who initially drew PSG, are now up against Atletico Madrid in the round of 16. While Real Madrid who were against Benfica will now face one of the best sides in the competition in PSG.
Villarreal are drawn up against Italian giants Juventus, and lastly, Liverpool have drawn against Serie A leaders Inter Milan.

Schedule for the Champions League round of 16
Firstly, the first leg of the round of 16 will take place on 15/16 and 22/23 February 2022, and the return leg is scheduled for 8/9 and 15/16 March 2022. Secondly, the quarter-final and semi-final draw will be held on Friday 18th March.
