Chelsea Aims to Break Premier League Records with £5m Signing

Pochettino

According to The Times, Chelsea is closely monitoring Illan Meslier as Mauricio Pochettino looks to bring in a new goalkeeper to Stamford Bridge. Meslier, the France international, recently expressed his willingness to join Chelsea this summer. But only if he is guaranteed the No.1 position under Pochettino. These comments have caught the attention of Chelsea. And The Times reports that they are now keeping a close eye on Meslier as a potential target.

Regrettably, Illan Meslier endured relegation to the Championship with Leeds during the 2022/23 season. His performance took a downturn as he faced a series of mistakes. Leading to being dropped by Sam Allardyce for the crucial stages of the relegation battle. Throughout the campaign, Meslier managed just five clean sheets in 34 Premier League matches. Conceding a total of 67 goals. It is noteworthy that Leeds acquired Meslier for a mere £5m.

Chelsea wants Meslier

Despite the aforementioned statistics reflecting a challenging season. Meslier is in regard as a promising talent who could benefit from a change of scenery. Notably, despite being just 23 years old, he has already amassed an impressive 107 appearances in the Premier League. Meslier achieved the significant milestone of reaching 100 games during Leeds’ 4-2 victory over Wolves in March, setting a new Premier League record as the youngest goalkeeper to achieve this feat.

Meslier expressed the complexities of his situation, acknowledging the absence of a coach and the uncertain future due to the club’s acquisition by the 49ers group. Currently, he is under contract with Leeds until 2026, and officially remains a Leeds player. However, he contemplates the best project for his career, whether it be with Leeds or another club. Meslier says his preference for a starting role rather than being a benchwarmer. Stating that he would be in interest in joining Chelsea or a less renowned club where he would have more opportunities to play.
