Chelsea €80m Superstar Deal: Contract Talks Already in Motion

Chelsea has been consistently linked with a potential move for Mike Maignan. Although Andre Onana has recently emerged as a strong contender. Despite the preference for Maignan, the transfer fee poses a challenge, as Onana is reportedly available at a significantly lower price. AC Milan said to demand €80 million for Maignan. While Onana’s asking price is in rumors to be closer to €60 million.

While the price difference is substantial, it is important to remember the adage that cutting costs in the short term can lead to greater expenses in the long run. The lesson of “buy cheap, buy twice” rings true in such situations.

Time is of the essence for Chelsea’s pursuit of Maignan. Reports suggest that he is currently in negotiations for a contract extension with Milan, which could potentially run until 2028. If Chelsea does not act swiftly, Maignan may choose to commit his future to his current club.

Chelsea and Maignan

Mike Maignan had a remarkable 2021-22 season, boasting the highest save percentage (81.2%) across the top five European leagues and the highest clean sheet percentage (53.1%) in Serie A. With 17 clean sheets in Serie A, he secured the top spot in that category as well.

Chelsea has already made an offer to the 27-year-old goalkeeper, proposing a contract worth €155,000 in weekly wages (equivalent to around €8 million per year), according to Alessandro Carra (via Calciomercato).

However, Chelsea has encountered a setback in their pursuit of Maignan. Foot Mercato reports that the French goalkeeper has expressed disinterest in joining the Blues this summer. Maignan’s decision is believed to stem from Chelsea’s failure to provide European football next season. Additionally, Maignan is reportedly discontent with the removal of Paolo Maldini from the role of technical director at AC Milan.

With Maignan’s pursuit on hold, Chelsea may shift their focus to Andre Onana, who has garnered praise for his performances this season. Inter Milan has placed a substantial price tag of €70 million on the 27-year-old shot-stopper, as reported by Sempre Inter. In comparison, Transfermarkt values Maignan at around €35 million. While Chelsea has other targets on their list, their preference appears to be centered around Onana or Maignan.
