Chelsea have reportedly placed a £7 million price tag on club captain Cesar Azpilicueta. The Spanish player has been at Stamford Bridge for a decade now. But with just one year left on his contract, Azpilicueta has been mentioned on the potential departures list.
Barcelona are said to have completed an agreement over personal terms with Azpilicueta. But their financial situation has made a permanent transfer difficult as of now. They will keep on pushing though.
The source claims there is an opportunity for bargaining. But the Blues would like to recoup the £7 million they spent to acquire Azpilicueta from Marseille in 2012. However, manager Thomas Tuchel would prefer to keep the Spaniard.
The 32-year-old would make £11 million per season before taxes if he moved to Barcelona, which would be a big salary raise. It could be an incentive for him to join the La Liga giants.
Azpilicueta To Barca: Good Move?
Azpilicueta will be joining his former teammate Andreas Christensen at Barcelona, should the move take place. The Danish defender was recently presented alongside Franck Kessie at the Nou Camp.
Barcelona will be looking to bolster their options in the backline. They have sent Clement Lenglet on loan to Spurs, while Samuel Umtiti is in talks with Rennes. Gerrard Pique has been declining for the last few seasons as well. It is only logical that they make a new defensive addition to their squad.
Azpilicueta may not be the flashiest of signings, but the Chelsea skipper can add a huge amount of experience in the dressing room. Additionally, his leadership skills are well documented. They can be crucial to navigate this period of rebuilding and uncertainty at Barcelona. His addition to the squad can be a worthwhile move in the short term.
