Chelsea Offers New Contract to Levi Colwill, but Defender Seeks Talks with Mauricio Pochettino Amid Interest from Manchester City

Chelsea has extended a new contract offer to Levi Colwill. But the young defender is seeking discussions with Mauricio Pochettino before making a decision about his future.

Despite having a long-term deal on the table, the 20-year-old is eager to gain clarity on his role within the squad. And he intends to have a conversation with Pochettino, who is set to commence his managerial role on July 3.

With Chelsea having a surplus of defensive options, Colwill is hesitant to become a mere backup player. Recognizing Pochettino’s admiration for him, the defender believes that discussing his future with the new manager could help resolve the contract deadlock.

Pochettino faces the challenge of managing the playing time of Thiago Silva, Benoit Badiashile, Wesley Fofana, and Trevoh Chalobah. All of whom are seeking regular first-team opportunities. In particular, Badiashile’s presence could hinder Colwill’s pathway as they share similar defensive profiles.

Brighton recently made a club-record £40 million bid for Colwill, impressed by his performances during a loan spell last season. However, Chelsea turned down the offer. And they will meet with Brighton in the coming days to discuss a potential deal for their primary midfield target, Moises Caicedo. Chelsea will reject any attempt to include Colwill in a swap deal.

Will Colwill Sign a New Contract with Chelsea?

Several Premier League clubs, including Manchester City and Liverpool, may express interest in Colwill. But Chelsea remains firm in their stance that the young defender is not for sale at any price.

Colwill is aware that a strong season could earn him a spot in England’s squad for the Euro 2024 tournament in Germany next summer. He has already caught the attention of national team manager Gareth Southgate. And he was promoted from the Under-21s to train with the senior group during the June internationals. Although he did not make an appearance, Southgate holds Colwill in high regard. Currently, Colwill is performing exceptionally well with Lee Carsley’s Under-21s side in the European Championship in Georgia. The Young Lions’ next match is against Portugal on Sunday.

As discussions continue, Colwill remains focused on his development and the potential opportunities that lie ahead in his career.
