Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea suffered a horrible loss in the EFL Cup final on penalties against Liverpool.

Chelsea started the game on the front foot and created good early chances. Christian Pulisic had an exceptional chance to open proceedings but could not convert the opportunity. While on the other end, Liverpool forced an excellent double save from Edouard Mendy.

Mason Mount missed a sitter just before the halftime interval. Going into the second half, the game looked very open but the defences of both sides were on top. Joel Matip did put the reds in front but the goal was ruled out due to a Virgil Van Dijk foul in an offside position in the buildup by VAR.

Chelsea player ratings

Edouard Mendy 9/10

Mendy was brought off for the penalty shootout. But Chelsea would have never been in that shootout bar without the exceptional Mendy saves.

Trevoh Chalobah 8/10

The young defender did quite well against the Liverpool frontline. He looked confident and defended quite well.

Thiago Silva 8/10

Another world-class display by the veteran defender. He made some excellent tackles in the whole 120 minutes. Unfortunate to end on the losing side.

Antonio Rudiger 8/10

Yet again reliable and did not put one foot wrong in the whole game. Rudiger did quite to minimize Mo Salah’s threat.

Cesar Azpilicueta 6/10

Always on the move down the right-hand flank for Chelsea. But was unfortunately forced off at the hour mark with an injury.

Marcos Alonso 6/10

Alonso did quite well in an attacking sense but struggled to always track back with the Liverpool attack and midfield.
N’Golo Kante 7/10

Once again covered every bit of grass in the middle of the park. But the French midfielder started to misplace a few passes as the game went by.

Mateo Kovacic 8/10

Played a lot of passes into the front players. The midfielder covered a lot of ground and made a lot of ball recoveries.

Mason Mount 6/10

Mount should have scored in the first half but managed to only find the post. He also created a few opportunities for his teammates.

Kai Havertz 8/10

Just like his attacking partners, Havertz should have ended the game with at least a goal and an assist. But his goal was ruled out late into extra time due to offside.

Christian Pulisic 6/10

His effort early on was saved by Caoimhin Kelleher. He also set up a brilliant scoring chance for Mason Mount, but the forward missed.
