Here we have the Chelsea player ratings in a lackluster display against Brighton. Chelsea moved up one place on the Premier League table but Liverpool has one game in hand. The Reds can gain their position back if they win against Chelsea on Sunday. Brighton secured a point against Chelsea and are now in the top half of the league.

The Blues had a chance to take the lead in the 16th minute when Azpilicueta unluckily hit the post. However, Chelsea took the lead in the 28th minute after their number 9 finished a brilliant header that came from an excellent corner from Mason Mount. Chelsea lost the ball in the middle of the park far too many times which gave Brighton an opportunity to counter.

Brighton scored yet another stoppage-time goal which has changed their result. Cucurella put in a pinpoint cross for Danny Welbeck whose header caught Mendy wrong-footed and could not save it. Brighton equalised in the 91st minute and this was Brighton’s third consecutive away goal in stoppage time.

Chelsea have lost ground again in the title race. However, they have a chance to go get a grip on the 2nd position if they win against Liverpool on Sunday. The Reds have also lost points against Leicester and will forward to their fixture on Sunday.

Chelsea Player Ratings vs Brighton

Edouard Mendy – 7/10

Mendy did well to save all the long and powerful shots which Brighton took. He could have gotten his 10th clean sheet but was unfortunate to concede late.

Cesar Azpilicueta – 7/10

He could have opened the scoring but was unfortunate to hit the post. Moreover, he was a cool head at the back to calm things down.

Andreas Christensen – 6/10

He made a horrific clearance after a miscommunication with Mendy which almost led to Chelsea conceding. However, he made a crucial interception just before halftime to prevent Chelsea’s lead.

Antonio Rudiger – 6/10

A reckless challenge could have gotten him sent off but was fortunate. However, he protected his goal from Maupay very well at times.

Christian Pulisic – 5/10

He could not find a way to get past Brighton’s defense. Moreover, he also failed to defend Brighton’s cross which led to their goal. Had very little to influence the game.

Mateo Kovacic – 5/10

Could have cost his team a goal when he lost the ball cheaply in the midfield. However, he played some good balls in attack but should have done better in midfield.

Jorginho – 5/10

He and Kovacic were run over in the midfield by Bissouma and Lallana. Jorginho’s weaker defensive side was exposed far too many times and Kante’s introduction was much needed.

Reece James – 6/10

Started on the left but also struggled in the start to get a grip of the game. However, he was forced off due to a hamstring injury in the 28th minute.

Callum Hudson-Odoi – 5/10

He had a few good moments to get Chelsea the 2nd goal. However, he failed to make the final pass and also fluffed a two on one chance where his final pass was intercepted by Veltman.

Mason Mount – 7/10

He was constantly running to make things happen but did not get enough help from his teammates.

Romelu Lukaku – 8/10

Took a brilliant header to open the scoring and did well physically to hold the Brighton defense.

Substitutes

Marcos Alonso – 6/10

He also had some moments to forget and a poor clearance straight to Bissouma who tested Mendy with a gifted chance.

Trevoh Chalobah – 5/10

Almost cost his side a goal when his failed interception opened things up for Maupay. Moreover, he also failed to stop Welbeck from scoring the equalizer.

N’Golo Kante – 7/10

Kante’s introduction was much needed after the Chelsea midfield was run over time and time again. However, Tuchel must be worried about Kante’s fitness as this was his 4th appearance in 10 days.
