Attacking duo Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner face injury issues in midweek Chelsea clash with Malmo.

The forward partnership was physically tested in a 4-0 victory at Stamford Bridge. Lukaku had an ankle injury and was taken off halfway through the first half. Werner followed in his footsteps and left the pitch just before halftime with a hamstring problem.

Hakim Ziyech, Christian Pulisic, Lukaku and Werner are now the names on Chelsea’s medical list. With the return of centre-back pairing Thiago Silva and Antonio Rudiger, the team can take a sigh of relief as they hope to maintain their top form.

Was it worth risking Lukaku against Malmo?

Former Inter Milan striker, Romelu Lukaku was expected to contest for the Premier League golden boot. Even though he had a strong return back at Stamford Bridge, his current form hasn’t been up to the mark. He has failed to score a goal in his last 6 club appearances.

It was speculated that the dip in form is due to lack of rest. Back to back club games plus being the no.1 striker for Belgium, the game time seems to have taken a toll on his body.

Considering the win versus Malmo, it looks as if the 28-years-old Belgium international could have taken a rest. And now he’s got one.

Can Chelsea manage to remain at top with increasing injury list?

Timo Werner was also unlucky with a hamstring problem. The pacey striker had been attempting to get into the box to provide an option for a low cross, only to pull up once he had entered the six-yard box. After receiving on field treatment, the physios decided it was best to pull him out of the game.

Thomas Tuchel’s management will again be put to test on the absence of his star forwards. The German manager has ruled out both Lukaku and Werner for the next few games. Fortunately, the London Giants have a great squad depth to handle the upcoming fixtures with the likes of Kai Havertz and Callum Hudson-Odoi set to take over the attacking mantle.

Chelsea’s next three fixtures include – Norwich, Newcastle and Burnley. News awaits as the following days will give more information about the injured players.
