Chelsea have now joined the scramble to secure Lionel Messi alongside PSG. The Blues are ready to make a strong bid to bring La Pulga to Stamford Bridge this summer.
Messi will not be renewing his contract with Barcelona. The Spanish giants are facing issues while simultaneously try to abide by La Liga rules. Therefore, Messi is now a free agent.
Last season, Manchester City seemed to be Messi’s preferred destination when he unsuccessfully tried to leave. However, they are out of contention having just signed Jack Grealish for a record fee.
Chelsea planning a shock move for Messi?
Seizing the opportunity, Roman Abramovich has stepped in to allow Chelsea a shot at a shock swoop for Messi. Chelsea have plenty to spend and are looking to make a purchase.
The club owner was keen to arrange a meeting with Messi’s representatives to discuss a potential move to London. The Blues are aware that they will have to compete with the likes of PSG.
PSG are however frontrunners and Abramovich will be looking for a meeting with Messi to change that and lure him to the Premier League.
The Blues are currently negotiating a deal to bring Romelu Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge. A fee worth €115,000,000 is close to being agreed. The Belgium international was at Stamford Bridge between 2011-14.
The Belgian striker is expected to sign a five-year contract worth around €12,000,000-a-year. This would make him the highest earner at Chelsea. Tuchel’s men will have their calculators out to see if they can sign both players, or only one.
The Champions League holders want Messi to follow Romelu Lukaku to Stamford Bridge. The Belgian is a leading target for his former club. Any move for Messi would be in addition to Lukaku arriving.
