Chelsea to target Kalidou Koulibaly in January transfer window

Chelsea could be reportedly plotting a move for Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly in the January window. The center-half is firmly on the Blues’ radar after missing out on Jules Kounde.

European champions Chelsea failed in their attempts to bring Kounde to Stamford Bridge this summer. However, Thomas Tuchel remains eager to bolster his defence. It is claimed that Chelsea will target Koulibaly when the January window opens.

For the moment though, the Senegalese is a key part of new Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti’s plans going forward.

Chelsea see quality and depth in Koulibaly

Tuchel’s side were unable to sign defensive reinforcements this window. The Kounde deal looked to be on the verge of completion. However, last minute complications disallowed it.

The Blues could once again enter the January market in search for a new central defender. According to reports, Koulibaly may be a potential option for the Champions League holders.

If we look at the situation critically, then one area where Chelsea’s squad may be lacking depth is in defence. The Blues did not bring in a direct replacement for Kurt Zouma after his move to West Ham. Not to mention, the failure of the Kounde deal.

Napoli colossus Koulibaly would be an intriguing option for Chelsea. The Senegal international has been labelled as one of the best centre-backs on the planet. Chelsea were linked with a move for him when Maurizio Sarri was in charge.

At 30 years old, he would be more of a short-term acquisition than the 22-year-old Kounde. Nonetheless, given his athleticism, aggression and ability to carry the ball out of defence, Koulibaly would have a major impact for the European champions.

Koulibaly’s future remains the subject of much speculation. His current deal is set to expire in June 2023 and Napoli are open to a sale. The Senegalese has made 2 appearances for Napoli this term. He has represented the club on 285 occasions since arriving from Genk in 2014.
