Covid crisis ahead of WI series

The 3 match ODI and 3 match T20I series against the Windies is set to begin from February 6. Amidst the pandemic, the BCCI has decided to host the 3 ODIs in Ahmedabad and the 3 T20Is in Kolkata. The 1st ODI on February 6 will mark the 1000th international ODI match for Team India. However, ahead of this historic occasion, several players in the Indian squad have tested Covid positive.

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has added Mayank Agarwal to India’s ODI squad after seven members, including three players of Team India (Senior Men) tested positive for COVID-19 following three rounds of RT-PCR testing.The members were asked to report in Ahmedabad on 31st January 2022 for the upcoming Paytm three-match ODI and T20I series against the West Indies. Every member was also asked to undergo an RT-PCR test at home before embarking on their journey to Ahmedabad and the travel was undertaken only after testing negative,”

Openers Shikhar Dhawan and Ruturaj Gaikwad, middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer and net bowler Navdeep Saini alongside 3 staff members are confirmed to have tested positive during the 3-day mandatory isolation period prior to the upcoming series. The BCCI has decided to keep the infected players under isolation till their recovery. As of now opener, Mayank Agarwal has been included in the squad as a replacement.

“Opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan and fast bowler Navdeep Saini’s (standby player) RT-PCR tests conducted on Monday (January 31st) have returned positive results,”.

“Fielding Coach T. Dilip and Security Liaison Officer B. Lokesh’s RT-PCR tests conducted on Monday (January 31st) have returned positive results,”

“Batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad’s RT-PCR test conducted on Tuesday (February 1st) has returned a positive result. He had tested negative during the first round of testing on Monday.”

“Batsman Shreyas Iyer and Sports Massage Therapist Rajeev Kumar’s RT-PCR tests conducted on Wednesday (February 2nd) have returned positive results. Both had tested negative in the first two rounds of testing.”

The upcoming series will also witness Rohit Sharma as the full-time ODI skipper of Team India. The Men In Blue are yet to register their first victory in 2022. The side will make a fresh start in the home season after the disappointment in South Africa. Cricketers will also hope to be in full flair as the IPL mega auction are only a few days away as well.
