Danny Murphy points out the importance of the 24-year old player. Murphy claims that Chelsea are a “much worse team when Reece James is not starting“. The Cobham graduate was named as the club skipper in the summer. Moreover, he is also regarded as the one of the best players in the current Chelsea team. He offers so much, both offensively and defensively from right-back position. Owing to all these, injuries make fans a bit frustrated given their side’s current situation. He even picked up a latest hamstring injury last week. The Athletic has since claimed that they’ve heard from one source connected to Chelsea that James may struggle to return before the end of the season.
Murphy was speaking to the FIVE’s YouTube channel. He said,
“I’ve got to feel for Reece James. People want to criticise a player when they get injured all the time because they think it’s mentality. Look, seven times hamstring injury.
What baffles me, the medical departments were great even when I was finishing, why can’t they find what it is? When he doesn’t play they’re not as good.”
When it comes to a 1v1 situation, James is a superb defender. Moreover, looking at the full-backs, he is technically gifted and a fabulous crosser of the ball than many others. He is definitely the one none will like to take out from the Chelsea squad. However, the management needs to find a way to cope up with his injuries amd inconsistent availability. Malo Gusto, 20, is surely a like for like replacement but is still immature. With the approaching winter window, they must look for some options to bolster their options in the full back role.
