David Luiz might be joining Benfica after leaving Arsenal at the end of this season. After a disastrous season in the Premier League and failing to reach the final of the Europa League, he might be on his way to the Portuguese giants.

The Gunners were outclassed by Villarreal in the semi-finals of the Europa League, this season. Luiz joined the London club from their arch-rivals, Chelsea in search of winning more trophies. But, unfortunately, he could win only the FA Cup in the 2019-20 season and FA Community Shield this season.

The 34-year-old centre-back has already informed his current club about leaving at the end of the season to the Lisbon club. His contract expires in July this season.

David Luiz has decided to retire at Benfica

According to the Daily Mail, the veteran may be en route to where his journey in football began. Luiz made his professional debut for Brazillian club Vitoria and he moved to Lisbon.

Before making the breakthrough move to Chelsea, he was a key player in his five-year stint at Benfica. He won one Primeira Liga and three Taca da Liga for the O Glorioso.

However, it was Luiz’s experience that really mattered for Arsenal coach, Mikel Arteta. He made 73 appearances for the North London club scoring four goals too. But, now it seems the club may have to look for a replacement and as a preparation for their next season.

Currently, David Luiz is hoping for a dream reunion with Benfica, who needs a leader like him. They are currently sitting at 3rd place in the Primeira Liga and are yet to play Taca da Liga final against Braga.

However, the dominance of Porto and Sporting Lisbon has made it difficult for them to win a title. However, the latter club had won the league this season and impressively, they are yet to lose. Additionally, it would be great to see David Luiz playing against Porto defender veteran Pepe.
