Emiliano Martinez set to replace David de Gea at Manchester United

According to reports, Manchester United have added Aston Villa and Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to their list of players to replace David de Gea as the number one at Old Trafford.

Since his switch from Arsenal to Aston Villa last summer, Emiliano Martinez has been on top form. The Argentina goalkeeper has made 38 appearances in all competitions for Aston Villa last term and in this time he has kept 15 clean sheets for the Villans (stats via Tranafermarkt).

This term Martinez has kept five clean sheets in 17 Premier League matches (stats via Tranafermarkt). Martinez has also taken over as the number one for Argentina national team. While he was a key part of their Copa America triumph.

According to a report by Daily Star, Manchester United scouts have watched the Aston Villa and Argentina number one quite a number of times last term and this term. The reports also suggest that the red devils are eyeing Martinez as a replacement for club legend David de Gea, if he decides to move away from the club. Emiliano Martinez’s current deal at Villa Park runs until the summer of 2024.

David de Gea has made a total of 463 appearances for the club in all competitions since his move from Atletico Madrid. The Spanish goalkeeper current contract runs until 2023. Dean Henderson replaced the club legend as the number one for the club last term. While various reports linked David with a move back to Spain last term.

But this term the 31-year-old has recaptured his best form and retained his place in the net at Old Trafford. But the Red Devils have drawn up a shortlist for a potential successor of David de Gea.

Manchester United goalkeeping department currently consists of David de Gea, Dean Henderson, Tom Heaton and Lee Grant. The club currently has three top goalkeepers at the club. But Dean Henderson has seen his opportunities limited this season and he is likely to move away from the club in the January transfer window. Ajax have shown interest in signing the England international on loan.

The Red Devils have also shown interest in Leeds’ goalkeeper Illan Meslier. Leeds have placed a £50m pice tag on the Fench international. Reports also suggest that Meslier is the number one target for the club, while Emiliano Martinez is also on the list.
