According to de Volkskrant, Erik ten Hag is open to taking the job at Manchester United. The Dutch manager previously has tried to dismiss the talks with Manchester United. Ralf Rangnick will move upstairs after his interim managerial stint at Manchester United. Following which United will have to look for a permanent manager. Ten Hag and Pochettino were amongst the frontrunners and Erik ten Hag is now willing to join the club.
Manchester United appointed Ralf Rangnick as their interim manager till the end of the season. Moreover, he will take over a consultancy job after his tenure as the interim manager stint is over. He will have direct say in United’s appointments, recruitments, and signings. Previously, Mauricio Pochettino was the frontrunner to take the full-time job at United. However, Pochettino and PSG have downplayed the talks and the rumours have cooled down for now.
Erik ten Hag was also previously asked about his take on the positions. He dismissed the talks suggesting that he is focused on Ajax and wants to win trophies there. However, in a recent interview with de Volkskrant, he said,
“I think I’m ready for it [to move to a top foreign club]. I would be happy to take up that challenge.”
“But I’m not chasing it. If it turns out that that step will never come, I will not say that my coaching career has failed. But I think I have sufficient competences to take on that challenge.”
What Erik ten Hag can bring to Manchester United?
Erik ten Hag is a tactically adept coach like Rangnick himself. He has a clear vision about how he wants his team to play. While he has done remarkable work at Ajax. Ten Hag took Ajax to the Champions League semi-finals in 2018-19 by beating various big clubs. His Ajax is known for the fluid and free-flowing football they play. He has won 139 games of the 188 he has managed and drawn 24. His side has scored 516 goals in the 188 games he has managed and conceded 160 goals. He also scored 2.35 points per match (stats via transfermarkt).
Moreover, he has also previously worked with Donny van de Beek and can get the absolute best out of him. United fans will be hungry to see their team play smooth and free-flowing football. Furthermore, he will be backed by Rangnick with his role upstairs. With proper recruiting support from Rangnick and with a great squad like Manchester United, Erik ten Hag can thrive at his job. He will be looking forward to replicating the wonders of Ajax at Manchester United.
Erik ten Hag is a very good option for Manchester United to consider. The final decision will be between Pochettino and Ten Hag and it all depends on the United board. Both of them are very luxurious options and can get United to play in a certain way. Pochettino and Ten Hag both have very good attacking plans and have the potential to make United a dangerous team in Europe. However, it is to be noted that Erik ten Hag does not have much experience in handling the big egos and will have more pressure to deliver than Mauricio Pochettino.
