Manchester United needed a win by at least two goals against Real Sociedad to top their group. But they only managed to win 1-0 by which the group leader is now Real Sociedad. Both have 15 points but Manchester United fell short with one goal in goal difference.

In their last meeting, the Spaniards managed to win 1-0 at Old Trafford after their penalty kick was awarded to Brais Mendez. Now, Manchester United have finally taken their revenge against Real Sociedad at their home.

However, despite their victory, Manchester United are on second place of their group, meaning they would have to work harder to reach the knockout stage.

Erik Ten Hag speaks

Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has a feeling that the poor officiating earlier in the group stage resulted from Manchester United not ending up on top.

He told on BT Sport:

“You do not always get what you deserve, In the first game, there was a penalty that we didn’t think was a penalty, but today we won. There are some positives, [Alejandro] Garnacho, Donny [Van de Beek] back in the team. We scored a good goal but unfortunately we didn’t get the two we needed.”

“I am really happy with his performance,”

Ten Hag said of Garnacho.

“He was a threat, he scored a goal and did well defensively. It was a great finish, a great attack and really enjoyable.”
