Former United legend Rio Ferdinand criticised Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta for handling of the goalkeeper situation at the Emirates.
The Spaniard replaced Aaron Ramsdale as the first choice goalkeeper for David Raya in this current campaign. Gunners signed the 24-year-old from Brentford in the summer transfer window.
Raya joined the North-London club for an initial £3 million, with an option of a permanent move at the end of the season. The Spaniard will get a fee of £27 million, if he joins Arsenal permanently.
However, Raya have missed only one game in Premier League and Champions League combined since his move. Ramsdale has been Arsenal’s first choice goalkeeper since couple of seasons, but he has made two apperances since loosing his place to Raya.
Meanwhile, Ramsdale made his return into starting line-up against Brentford in the Premier League. It was his first start since the 3:1 win over Manchester United in September.
Ferdinand claims Ramsdale’s future at Arsenal is not secure
Speaking on Ramsdale’s unfortunate situation, Rio Ferdinand have doubts over his future at Arsenal. He said :-
“I don’t think today matters, whatever happens he’ll be the number two goalkeeper at Arsenal.
“It doesn’t matter what the manager says publicly, I don’t think Raya’s position is under threat at all.
“He obviously thinks Raya gives them something else, and I think you look at Ramsdale, he’s been left in limbo because the manager hasn’t come out and said who his number one and number two definitively are.
“It’s a bit like Joe Hart for City and country, Pep Guardiola comes in and tells him he’s not the No.1 anymore. Yes, that puts Joe’s nose out of joint for a while but at least he knows where he stands. It’s a difficult place for Ramsdale.”
