Former Chelsea Defender Speaks On Callum Hudson-Odoi

The case of Callum Hudson-Odoi is an intriguing one. He was once seen as one of the brightest young talents in football. Chelsea fans thought that they had the successor to Eden Hazard in the squad already. German giants Bayern Munich were also in for his signature. It led to Chelsea giving him a weekly wage of £120,000.

However, he has not been able to cement a place in the first team. The 21-year-old is a terrific talent, and has shown his class from time to time. But former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson says he’s running out of time to succeed.

He has spells where he looks unplayable and then he has days where it looks like he should not be playing in the Premier League. If he gets his head straight then I think he has got a lot to offer. But I think his days at Chelsea are over, to be honest. He is still young but for me, he has got a lot to learn.

When he initially joined the Chelsea first team, Callum Hudson-Odoi appeared destined for the very top. But the English youngster hasn’t grown as many would have hoped. A serious ACL injury in 2019 stalled his development.

Minutes will be hard to come by for the English winger. Chelsea have the likes of Christian Pulisic, Raheem Sterling, Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech ahead of Hudson-Odoi in the pecking order. He will have to work extra hard if he wants to make a mark on the Chelsea faithful.

The England international still has a chance to recover and contribute significantly to Thomas Tuchel’s team. In his initial days, the German deployed him as a wingback. Perhaps a similar role can suit Hudson-Odoi. But given that his career has recently stagnated, he would be wise to heed Johnson’s advice.
