Scott McTominay will reportedly not be on sale this summer despite the arrival of Frenkie De Jong. Although he has often been criticized in the past, it looks like Erik Ten Hag is offering him a chance to prove himself.
The Red Devils are working hard to secure a deal for Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong this summer. It was widely believed that it will lead to the departure of Scott McTominay, who has often been touted as a weak link at Old Trafford.
The Times claims that earlier in the transfer window, Newcastle United and another Premier League team made hesitant inquiries regarding McTominay’s availability. But they were swiftly turned down. After Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard, and Juan Mata left Old Trafford, McTominay is one of the few central midfielders still playing there. If nothing else, he is a capable backup for Frenkie De Jong.
He does not have the technicality of the Dutchman, but McTominay adds steel and energy to the centre of the park. Besides, being an academy graduate, McTominay will give it all for the badge.
Manchester United’s Midfield Woes: De Jong To The Rescue?
Manchester United have been lacking in the defensive midfield department for quite some time now. The last defensive midfielder they signed was Nemanja Matic from Chelsea, who was quite old. They need a new marquee name in the centre of the park. Frenkie De Jong has been earmarked for that.
De Jong will cost United £56 million up front, with add-ons potentially raising that to £70 million. Following prolonged negotiations, the Catalan giants finally agreed to sell. De Jong will sign a five-year deal for £250,000 per week at Old Trafford.
With an elite talent like De Jong, United will certainly improve their points tally from last season. McTominay has shown glimpses of his ability in the past. Manchester United fans will hope that Ten Hag can help him realize his potential.
