Arsenal FC‘s centre-back Gabriel Magalhães has recently been rumoured of wanting to leave the club. The rumours have emerged after the defender was left on the bench by Arteta for Arsenal’s first three matches, posting a big question about the Brazillian’s importance in the side.
Mikel Arteta opted for the same 4-3-3 formation as the last season, despite the new signings made. However, going for the same formation wasn’t suprising at all. Although, the team selection is the element of suprise that was introduced by Arteta. Surprisingly, the Gunners boss decided to play Ben White in the CB position along with William Saliba, with Thomas Partey unexpectedly playing at the RB position. New signing Jurrien Timber was playing as a LB, till he got injured. As a result of which, Gabriel was left on the bench.
Even after Timber’s injury in the first game itself, Gabriel didn’t earn a spot in the starting 11 for the next two games. This led to the emergence of the rumours about the possibility of Gabriel leaving this summer. The rumours suggested a possibility of a ‘fallout‘ between Arteta and Gabriel. Thus, leading to the manager willing to let go of the defender this summer.
Arteta confirms that Gabriel is going nowhere
Mikel Arteta recently ‘quashed‘ all the rumours suggesting Gabriel’s departure. The Spanish manager, while speaking about Gabriel Jesus’ return, also spoke about Magalhães. Speaking about Gabriel’s situation, Arteta said: “It is difficult for him, yes, but we have to focus on what is now and what is ahead and how we’re going to evolve that. There will be different relationships. Gabby will play a lot of games, I’m sure. It’s about bringing the competition high and trying to make the team play better, better, better and win more games. That’s the purpose of all of us. Of course I have explained to him why he’s not in the team- especially someone who has played a lot of minutes and games with us in the last year,” said Arteta.
The words of Arteta confirm that Gabriel still seems to be an important part of his plans ahead. In a crucial season ahead for the Gunners, quality players are required. This is important to provide a good squad depth.
Even though Gabriel might not be starting now, but with the hectic schedule coming up, Arteta will be required to rotate the squad frequently. Therefore, it looks almost for sure that the Brazillian will start atleast a few games in a long season ahead.
