Gary Neville and Roy Keane both agree that Diego Simeone could be a good option for Manchester United

Former Manchester United players Gary Neville and Roy Keane were both of the views that the club could appoint Diego Simeone. The Atletico Madrid manager is currently the longest-serving manager of one club. He has been the manager of Atletico Madrid since 2011 and has received a lot of praise from everyone around the world. He recently led Atletico Madrid to a win over Manchester United in the Round of 16 of the UCL.

Diego Simeone also faced Liverpool in the group stages of the Champions League. However, he was on the losing side in both of those fixtures. After refusing to handshake with Jurgen Klopp, many Liverpool fans turned against him. However, he later defended himself by saying that he did not feel right to shake hands after facing defeat.

Atletico Madrid also knocked out Liverpool right after their Champions League-winning season. Simeone still remains one of the most respected managers in the world as he has guided Atletico Madrid to two LaLiga titles and two Champions League finals. However, his dip is having an inconsistent season even after winning the LaLiga just last year.

This has led to people considering his position as the manager of Atletico. Manchester United are yet to appoint a new manager and they are likely to announce that before the end of this season. Ralf Rangnick will also have a say in the appointment of the next permanent manager. The German manager has several options to choose from but is not one of the favorites to take over as of now.

Why Manchester United should not hire Diego Simeone?

Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid is known for their strong defense and the work rate of each and every player. This has certainly made them one of the strongest teams in Europe. Simeone’s passion and aggression could be seen in his players on the pitch. Manchester United players definitely need that aggression and passion which brings out their best work rate.

However, Atletico Madrid is not the best team to watch them play. Simeone’s conservative approach might frustrate the United fans as it did when Mourinho was in charge. United is a club that used to dominate their opponents but it won’t be the case if Simeone takes charge. This could again turn out to be a poor decision by the United board in the appointment of a manager as there have been quite a few previously.

Moreover, he will be having a lot more competition in the Premier League compared to LaLiga. Real Madrid and Barcelona were only two clubs he lost out to. However, in the Premier League, any club can defeat any other club does not matter the standing of the league. Despite facing less competition, he has only won the league two times after spending a total of eleven years in Spain.

Manchester United needs a manager who will set a team that can dominate and controls the game. Erik ten Hag looks likely to take over at the club and he has that ability to control the game. Whereas under Simeone, United could see themselves creating lesser chances and even the Argentine manager might face the sack if the players do not deliver.
