Former India skipper and player, Sunil Gavaskar has backed Virat Kohli and stated that he will definitely pick him in his T20I squad.
Apparently, Kohli has been quite impressive in this year’s IPL wherein he got two tons and six half-centuries.
Overall, Kohli has amassed 639 runs in 14 matches and has silenced all his critics who raised doubts about his form.
Which is why Gavaskar is full of praise for the former India skipper and has stated that Kohli will definitely be a part of the T20I squad.
Says Gavaskar on Kohli,
Virat (Kohli) would definitely be in my T20I team on current form for India’s upcoming matches in the format. He has scored two hundreds (in IPL 2023). Hitting two hundreds in T20 cricket, even scoring a 50 is difficult. This great batter has notched up two hundreds. If I was a selector and India were playing a T20 in June this year, I would, without doubt, pick him in the squad.
For Gavaskar, form needs to be taken care of for India players
Meanwhile, Gavaskar has also stressed the fact that all of India’s players, including Kohli, need to be in their best form before the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Currently, the BCCI is in the process of remaking the T20I squad for India wherein they are thinking of removing Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
They are planning to pick Hardik Pandya as the skipper under whom they are going to put together a new young squad.
As per reports, the next edition of the T20 World Cup is going to be held in the West Indies and America.
That’s why Gavaskar is saying that every player’s form will be key for this event as will be seen in next year’s IPL and before the T20 World Cup.
If we are talking about an upcoming T20 international, say India are playing a match in June, then he (Kohli) definitely fits into the team, the kind of form that he has shown. But, speaking about the 2024 World Cup, which will be held in West Indies and America, the form of players needs to be observed in the IPL before that and then we can talk about selection for the World Cup squad.
