How did Aston Martin F1 move on from the green Red bull?

Kelly Piquet

Aston Martin came to the 2022 F1 season with the AMR22 challenger which proved a little too slow at the start.

Just like many other teams, Aston Martin also struggled with the implementation of the new technical regulations at the start of the 2022 season. The team struggled a lot with the pace making it hard to secure even a top-10 finish.

The design philosophy adopted by the side was based more on a compromised design. The motive seemed simple – to easily adapt new designs whichever worked.

However, they introduced a new design named the ‘b-spec’ during the Spanish GP weekend. The design was met with a lot of allegations of copying and adapting the concept of red bull’s RB18.

The new concept ultimately earned the title of the “green red bull”. Red bull boss Christian Horner along with the red bull pitwall took a complete dig of the situation drinking the lime version of red bull cans. The Silverstone-based squad had earlier introduced a highly aggressive rear wing design forcing FIA to ban the idea itself.

Aston Martin however denied all the allegations of copying any design. When asked about how they got through that period, Aston Martin F1 team principal Mike Krack answered:

“I think we would have maybe taken it more on board if there was any truth in it. We really did our stuff.”

“We knew that this might come and I think if you look back, we were quite relaxed about it and there was no war of words from our side.”

“It calmed down in the meantime and we have moved on.”

Aston Martin will be joined by Fernando Alonso for the 2023 season campaign.
