IPL 2022 may start on 2nd April in Chennai

Indian Premier League (IPL) is the biggest T20 franchise cricket tournament in the globe. Recently, BCCI revealed that the upcoming season of the IPL may start from the 2nd of April, 2022.

Although, nothing else has been finalized till now. BCCI has contacted the major stakeholder of the tournament about their plans of starting the new season on the 2nd of April. While the date is not confirmed yet but the venue for the opening match will surely be held in Chennai.

60 matches were held every year till now with 8 teams in the league. However, in the 15th season, two more teams are going to take part making it ten teams. As ten teams will take part in the league, the number of matches will rise to 74 with each having to play nine home and away matches respectively.

BCCI is considering the season to be about 60 days long and hoping to host the final in the first week of June. First match of IPL is always played in the home venue of winner of previous season.

However, it has not been decided yet which team will play against the defending champions Chennai Super Kings. Over the years, we have seen that in the Inaugural match most of the times Mumbai Indians have been the opponents of Chennai Super Kings.

IPL 2022 to return to India: Jay Shah

Recently, in the title celebration of the Chennai Super Kings, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said that IPL 2022 will fully return to India. 

“I know you all are waiting to see CSK play at Chepauk. Well, the moment is not very far. The 15th season of the IPL will take place in India and it will be more exciting than ever with two new teams joining. We have a mega auction coming up, so it will be interesting to see what the new combinations look like,”

said Jay Shah, Secretary of BCCI.

The full season of the 2020 and a half of the 2021 season was played in UAE. The upcoming season is surely going to be one of the best IPL seasons so far. Although till now, a lot is there to be completed for the upcoming season.

Meanwhile, on 8th December India will fly to South Africa. Before India leave, they will play two test matches against New Zealand. The final match will be held in Mumbai from where the team is going to leave for South Africa.
