Is McLaren joining hands again with old partner Honda?

McLaren left the side of Honda back in 2017 switching to Renault-powered engines in 2018.

Since 2021, McLaren has been using Mercedes-supplied power units. Before the Mercedes partnership began, the side used Renault-supplied power units following a rather disastrous spell with Honda.

McLaren has enjoyed Mercedes engines since 2021. However, the side’s spell with Mercedes hasn’t been that fruitful with only one win.

The side might seem happy with the Silver Arrows power units. However, team boss Zak Brown has indicated a change. The Woking based squad might be thinking of changing the supplier soon enough.

“We’re very happy with Mercedes, We have some time to decide what we want to do in ’26 and beyond,” said Brown.

“I think it’s exciting for Formula 1 that you have as many manufacturers coming into the sport. I think that shows the growth and excitement for the sport.

“So it’s something that Andreas [Stella] and I are in the process of slowly reviewing. We’re not in a big rush and we are very happy with Mercedes. So we’ll see how things play out over the next year or so before we need to make a decision.”

Is Honda returning to the scene?

The McLaren-Honda partnership started in the 2015 season and was not a successful one. The engines were incredibly slow with Fernando Alonso famously calling the engine GP2 engine.

Following the disastrous spell with McLaren, the Honda-powered units have successfully helped Red bull to clinch the 2021 and 2022 titles. Regardless, the duo is separating in 2026.

Red bull has officially announced its new partnership with Ford starting in 2026.

With McLaren boss indicating a new partnership, Honda and McLaren reunitining is a possibility we cant deny. Further, the Japanese manufacturer currently has no team that is using its power units for the 2026 season.

Can the two once again come together? If they do will the new partnership be better or worse?
