Jonathan David in the radar of Arsenal

Jonathan David is on the shortlist of the Gunners for a potential move in the January transfer window. As per journalist Fabrizio Romano, a number of European clubs including Arsenal are in the race to sign David.

Arsenal has been in search of a new talisman for manager Mikel Arteta. The North London giants are in pursuit of a striker because Alexandre Lacazette is out of contract at the end of the current campaign. As things stand, the Frenchman is not interested to renew his contract.

On the other hand, the future of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is also not certain. He has been stripped of the captaincy for behind-the-scenes disciplinary reasons.

So both the star strikers are linked on their way out of the Emirates. As a result, The Gunners have been heavily linked with the Canadian forward.

Jonathan David started his youth career in Gent and went on to earn senior caps with them. He made an approximately €30m move to Ligue 1 side Lille on a five-year contract in 2020.

The 22-year-old forward has 58 appearances for the Ligue 1 side and has scored on 25 occasions. Meanwhile, last season itself he bagged 13 goals on their way to the Ligue 1 title.

Probability of signing

As things stand, the deal seems to be a difficult one despite Arsenal’s interest. It’s been reported that he isn’t keen on a move to the Emirates Stadium.

On the other hand, Arsenal would like to secure their primary target Dusan Vlahovic. The deal is yet to make any advances despite being linked with a £150m package offered by Arsenal.

If the Vlahovic deal doesn’t go through, then Arsenal might seriously push for David. He could therefore be a perfect alternative as he’s not going to cost as much as the Serbian.

The Canadian international has been in electric form this term. He is strong with both feet and has a good pace. So, he can easily fit in with Arteta’s system as he seems the ideal mix between both Aubameyang and Lacazette.

However, he has more than two-and-a-half years left in his contract and might cost them around €45m.

Therefore, it would make sense for Edu Gaspar and the Gunners’ recruitment team to turn to the Lille beast in the coming weeks.
