Reports coming out of St. James’ Park state that Newcastle United are looking to secure the services of their on-loan player on a permanent basis. Journalist Dean Jones has reported that Newcastle’s Aston Villa loanee Matt Targett is tipped to make his move permanent. The left-back joined the Magpies in January and impressed decently for them. Moreover, Villa signing Lucas Digne further supports the rumor that Targett will leave them in the summer.
Targett made 17 appearances for Aston Villa before joining Newcastle in January. Steven Gerrard’s appointment changed the dynamic, as despite being an integral member of the squad Villa facilitated Targett’s loan. However, the left-back has continued his improvement at Newcastle, playing 12 league games for them. Moreover, new manager Eddie Howe is more than impressed with Targett and wants to keep the player at Newcastle beyond his loan spell.
Matt Targett’s loan deal at Newcastle expires in the coming summer. However, Aston Villa has inserted a buy option of around £15 million for the Magpies. Dean Jones has suggested that Newcastle is planning to execute the option to sign the Villa player. Moreover, Targett has massively helped Newcastle soar from relegation bound to a 9th position in the table. Therefore, the 26-year-old may reap rewards for his brilliant displays.
What has Dean Jones said about the on-loan Newcastle player
Eddie Howe seems to fully trust the Targett as the player has started every game for them since joining them. Moreover, Targett has been solid defensively in the backline for the Magpies. In his 12 outings, the left-back has posted 2.3 tackles, 1.6 interceptions, and 2.3 clearances per game for Newcastle. His exploits have helped Newcastle win an impressive 8 out of 12 games he is featured in.
Targett comes in handy with an attacking threat as well, delivering 1.3 key passes and 1.6 crosses per game. Furthermore, the left-back creates 2.4 shot-creating actions as well, along with pressing the opponent almost 11 times per 90. That is enough to support the argument that Targett earns a permanent move to the Magpies. Here’s what Dean Jones has revealed about Newcastle’s intentions regarding Targett’s move.
While speaking to GiveMeSport Jones said,
“Newcastle was always open-minded about it. They weren’t sure whether they would want him long-term or not. From what I’m told, Eddie Howe has now decided, along with the recruitment team, that this is a good addition to this team.”
Moreover, a report from 90min has reported that other clubs have shown interest in Targett as well. Leicester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Leeds United are the ones keeping a tab on the on-loan Newcastle player. However, no matter what rumors are that Targett’s parent club Aston Villa wants to get rid of their £35,000-per-week player. But the left-back’s influence at Newcastle has reportedly convinced the Magpies to acquire him from Villa.
