Journalist Simon Phillips shared his views on Romelu Lukaku’s future after his loan spell at Inter Milan.
The Belgian attacker has suffered a dry spell since joining Chelsea in 2021, scoring just eight goals in 26 top-flight appearances. This season he was sent back to Inter Milan on loan.
Chelsea broke the transfer record to seal the deal for Lukaku for £97.5 million. But now the Blues regret their decision. Lukaku’s form has been disastrous since joining the club.
PHILLIPS CLAIMS LUKAKU IS NOT HAPPY WITH CHELSEA
Speaking to GiveMeSports, Simon Phillips claimed that Lukaku doesn’t want to stay at the club next season and Chelsea might also sell him in the next transfer window. Phillips further explained:-
“What I’ve heard on that is Lukaku doesn’t want to come back to Chelsea; Chelsea aren’t particularly keen for him to come back either. But the fact is that he’s only on a season-long loan at the moment and there’s nothing to suggest that will get extended. Chelsea are obviously keen to extend that loan by another season or sort out a permanent sale.
“Inter obviously, at the moment, are holding their cards close to their chest. They want to see how he performs for the rest of the season, if he can keep injury free and score goals. And if it goes well, then yes, they will look to extend it for another season on loan and then at the end of that, it was always the plan to then talk about a permanent deal.”
Lukaku has just scored two goals in 13 Seria A appearances this season for Inter Milan. The Italian club is not willing to make the move permanent to the San Siro. Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly will like to sell the Belgian for a cut price in the summer window.
