Levi Cowill signs a new deal with Chelsea despite the rumours of exit

Chelsea

Chelsea have announced the contract extension of their talented young defender a few days ago. Levi Colwill has signed a new six-year deal with the Blues, committing his future to the club. Colwill was earlier tipped for a move away from Stamford Bridge this summer, with interest shown by other clubs.

Colwill spent the entire 2022/23 season on a loan spell with Brighton. He made 24 appearances in all competitions for the club. His displays were impressive and impactful, therefore earning him a lot of praise. Brighton and De Zerbi had even made plans to try and sign Levi on a permanent deal, after his successful loan spell with them. Colwill was also reportedly interested in making a move to Brighton, where he felt valued. However, Pochettino’s arrival at Chelsea changed the youngsters plans completely.

Mauricio Pochettino convinced Levi Colwill to stay

According to SkySports, Mauricio Pochettino plans convinced Colwill to stay at Chelsea. The Argentine manager reportedly informed Levi about his importance in his plans going forward and how much he valued Colwill as a player. Colwill’s strong spell at Brighton was enough for Pochettino to offer him a contract extension with the Blues.

Chelsea look in good shape defensively. Their latest signing of Axel Disasi seems to have completed their needs for their backline. However for Colwill, he knows that he will have to fight his way into Chelsea’s starting XI. Currently the club captain Thiago Silva seems like the only fixed CB in Chelsea’s starting XI. With other options of Wesley Fofana and Axel Disasi, the young Levi maybe facing a limit to his game time. However, Pochettino’s plans reportedly suggest that Colwill will be getting a decent amount of game time, despite the competition in the squad.

What next for Chelsea?

Despite the frustrations, Chelsea have still remained interested in signing Moises Caicedo from Brighton. However now, with Caicedo also pushing for an exit, Chelsea might finally be able to get an agreement with Brighton for the player. Apart from Caicedo, Chelsea are also reportedly in talks with Juventus for a potential swap deal for Dusan Vlahovic, in exchange of Romelu Lukaku. They are now also reported to be in contention to try and sign Michael Olise from Crystal Palace.

Chelsea have a crucial season coming up for them. After the disappointment of the last season, the Blues aim to bounce back strongly this season. They face Liverpool in their first game of the new season. For a young player like Colwill, it is a great opportunity to prove his worth and therefore, establish himself as an important part of Mauricio Pochettino’s team.
