The opening lap crash between old teammates Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton has been the major talking point of the 2022 Belgian GP.

Opening laps of the 2022 Belgian GP were full of excitement thrill and chaos. Old rivals Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso found each other at the center of this chaos.

Both the veterans came together in the opening lap.

The crash resulted in the retirement of Lewis Hamilton from the Belgian GP, his 2nd DNF in 4 seasons.

The crash made Alonso furious as we heard the Spaniard ranting on the radio:

“What an idiot closing the door from the outside. We had a mega start but this guy only knows how to drive and start in first.”

This rather overreaction from Alonso was not received by his old teammate from McLaren. After the crash, Hamilton responded when asked if he was going to apologize to Alonso:

“No. I would have until I heard what he said. I know that’s how things feel in the heat of the moment, but it’s nice to know how he feels about me.”

However, all responses were not picked in the post-race interviews. When asked by a Brazilian TV about Alonso calling him an idiot, the 7-time world champion responded:

“I prefer not to comment about that. We had different results in our careers. This is the kind of thing you say in the heat of the moment.”

Although Lewis Hamilton’s words were not as harsh and direct towards Alonso, they still said a lot. Indicating the way both their careers turned out he took an interesting dig at Alonso.

Fernando Alonso had won World Title twice in a row in 2005 and 2006, a rather impressive feat. However, the following year, then-rookie Hamilton challenged Alonso in McLaren as his teammate.

Furthermore, since then both careers have turned out completely differently. Hamilton went on to win 7 world titles dwarfing Alonso’s two.
