Maatsen snubs Feyenoord transfer to fight for Chelsea future

Chelsea fullback Ian Maatsen has overturned his transfer decision to Feyenoord. According to a report from AD, Maatsen wants to go for his chance at Stamford Bridge for the time being. Tyrell Malacia’s departure to Manchester United has put Feyenoord in need of a new left-back. That’s why the arrival of Maatsen was so awaited at the club.

Several reports had put forward the claim that Maatsen had an agreement with the Eredivisie club to join them on a loan deal. At one point it was even said he’d traveled to the Netherlands to complete the transfer. However, most of the rumors have now been squashed following his denial of a loan move.

Maatsen has returned to Stamford Bridge following a loan spell with Coventry City. He scored his first goal for Coventry City in a match against Fulham. Maatsen has made 40 appearances for the Sky Blues and has scored three goals for them in the 2021-22 season.

Earlier, in the 2019/20 season, he was on a loan to Charlton Athletic. On 20 October, he made his league debut for Charlton, coming off the bench as a second-half substitute in the side’s 1–0 win over Blackpool.

Fierce Competition at Chelsea

The competition for Chelsea’s left-back position this season is fierce. Ben Chilwell has completely recovered from his ACL injury. He was able to garner some minutes against Watford on the final day of the Premier League. Marcos Alonso is in formidable form currently in the Chelsea shirt. He is a consistent performer and an amazing athlete. Marcos Alonso held his own in the left-back position following Ben Chilwell’s injury

However, Marcos Alonso is looking for a departure from Chelsea this summer. Barcelona have shown interest in the Spaniards. If Xavi and Barcelona come calling, it’ll be hard for Alonso to not heed their call. This means Maatsen has a chance at first-team football this summer.

The left-back’s single appearance for the Blues came in an EFL Cup game back in 2019. Moreover, he has a contract with Chelsea until 2024.
