Harry Maguire who has been on the bench most of the time under Erik Ten Hag showed a fabulous performance after getting placed in starting lineup against West Ham. He stepped in for his team when they needed their captain. Harry Maguire most of the time has been part of criticism about his captaincy and defensive skills. But that wasn’t the case against West Ham last weekend.
He was chosen by Erik Ten Hag alongside Lisandro Martinez to lead the line. He struggled at first for a few minutes after the game started but eventually became comfortable.
De Gea made a few stunning saves and Dalot cleared off the danger with vital post clearance. Both of the centre backs were amazing in the match. Maguire showed a good performance which might get him his confidence back and maybe his place in starting lineup.
Maguire had a key role in dealing with crosses by opponents and he also maintained compact defense while dealing with opponents.
Maguire’s best play was in the 93rd minute.
Although, Maguire was great the whole of the match but the moment which caught everyone’s eyes was in the 93rd minute. It was when Pablo Fornals beat past Bruno Fernandez and cut the ball back to unmarked Jarrod Bowen. He took the shot which would have gone for the top corner but Maguire was there to block it.
Performances like these would surely get his place back in starting lineup. But he needs to work hard for it as there are the likes of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez who are already in starting eleven.
Manchester United will face Real Sociedad on Thursday night in the Europa league. It would be interesting to see who Ten Hag chooses for his defense. Lindelof is currently sidelined with a sickness, he might pair up with Maguire as a backup CB.
